14 February 2018

Journal of General Virology is pleased to announce that the 2018 Marjory Stephenson Prize will be awarded to Editorial Board member (and former Editor-in-Chief), Professor Geoffrey L. Smith FRS from the University of Cambridge.

An expert on poxviruses, Professor Smith is the Chair of the WHO Advisory Committee for variola virus, as well as a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow and a Fellow of the Royal Society. His current research focuses on the way that the vaccinia virus interacts with human cells and modulates the immune system. These findings have been important to his work on improving vaccinia virus as a vaccine vector.

You can hear Professor Smith talk about his work on poxviruses as part of the Marjory Stephenson Prize Lecture he will be giving at the Society’s Annual Conference in Birmingham 10–13 April 2018. For more information, including the full programme and registration, click here.

The Prize is named after Society founding member and former President Marjory Stephenson, and is awarded to an individual who has made exceptional contributions to the discipline of microbiology.
